Design Travel explores the interplay between design and travel. It might be a new hotel for business travellers, an airline collaborating with a world-renowned architect or a product designed specifically to enhance the travel experience. Our brief is to make you want to be there and inspire you to seek out incredible design examples when you travel, or in your own city.

SOUND ADVICE: Tunes and Travel with Adam Carr of the BOSE Design Team

SOUND ADVICE: Tunes and Travel with Adam Carr of the BOSE Design Team

No doubt if you’re a traveller, commuter or just like music, you’ll have invested a little in some headphones in your time. If you’ve ever flown on a commuter express route, like between Sydney and Melbourne, or New York to London, you’ll see a fair few corporate types donning the old Bose noise cancelling numbers. There are a few reasons why they’re so popular, and one of them is that they continue to innovate to create small but mighty products. I spoke to Adam Carr from the Bose Design Team to hear more about what they’re designing with travellers top of mind.

Which products do you recommend for travellers and why?
We live in an increasingly noisy world, and the new Bose QuietComfort 35 headphones offer the best noise cancellation available and a custom-engineered Bluetooth system for a strong and consistent connection anywhere. The QC35 has up to 20 hours of battery life, lasting longer than a flight from Sydney to Los Angeles. While the QC35 is packed with proprietary technology for performance, the finer details of materials, build and finish are equally precise. They’re refined yet rugged, lightweight yet stable, with legendary Bose comfort which is perfect for those long-haul flights.

For whatever you’re doing, the Bose QuietControl 30 in-ear headphones not only features premium sound quality but a new Bose breakthrough – controllable noise cancellation – which puts you in charge of how much of the world you shut out. The QC30 has up to 10 hours of battery life from a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, lasting as long as a fully-charged phone or tablet. The QC30 features tiny ear buds that eliminate the pressure and aches of conventional ear tips for hours and hours of wear.

How does Bose incorporate the needs of travellers at the design brief stage?
Bose has spent almost two decades researching and developing products for use on the go. With both the QC35 and QC30, we spent a lot of time making sure our noise cancellation and audio technologies merged with a product design that’s comfortable to wear for hours on end. These requirements often conflict, so that’s where the fun begins! Our engineers and designers work together to develop solutions that maximize on all aspects of product comfort, design and portability we’re going for, while still delivering optimum performance.

Durability is a key consideration - how durable are these headphones and what makes them so?
When you want to take your music anywhere, you need headphones that have been built to keep up. With impact-resistant materials, glass-filled nylon and corrosion-resistant stainless steel, the Bose QC35 headphones are engineered to survive life on the go. Materials matter. That’s why the QC35 headband isn’t just soft, it’s luxurious. Wrapped in Alcantara - the soft covering material used by prestigious international companies in various applications, like yachts and high-end automobiles - not only provides durability but a welcome comfort designed for all-day listening. Also, the ear cushions are manufactured from a synthetic protein leather, and have a silicone bead for passive noise reduction. We used an ergonomic neckband design for the QC30 headphones. A lightweight, contoured neckband conforms to your body and it’s designed with soft, durable materials to stay comfortable – perfect for listening all day.

Where do you and your design team get their inspiration from?
On both QC30 and QC35, our designers were obsessed with creating timeless products that not only look beautiful but also integrate with the human form in motion. We were driven to create solutions that integrate seamlessly with our users when they are travelling the world or moving throughout their day.  QC35’s headband flows gracefully over the head and folds for compact storage when not in use. QC30 elegantly rests on the neck and allows freedom of movement for our user’s increasingly mobile lifestyles.

To create these timeless products, our designers focused on using premium materials that deliver the highest level of performance while enabling refined details. QC35 utilises precision-formed and machined anodized aluminum to deliver a crisp ear cup form and a premium visual appearance. Micro-perforated aluminum grilles and sculpted silicone neckband deliver controllable noise cancelling technology and all-day comfort in a durable and premium package.
